High Idle warm up

Searched for this problem and didn't see much. I have a 95 Avalon with 182K that runs like new. The problem I am having is that when you start the engine cold the idle is way too high. Once it is warm the idle returns to normal.

I assume the (choke) idle is computer controlled, is there any way of adjustment or correction? Thanks.

1500rpm or so is normal if the engine is cold. "Way too high"? Tells us nothing. What is the rpm?

High fast idle is a big and common problem. If your ECT sensor checks out and your idle function works ok at normal op temp, your problem is almost certainly built into the ECM look-up tables. You need to fool the ECM into thinking the engine is warmer than it actually is.

I wonder why the ES300 already idles at 1250-1300 when cold. Different ECT sensor, or ECU setting.



Most my Avalon has ever idled cold was at 2000rpm when it was below freezing. Normally it idles at 1750rpm, then drops to 1500rpm in about 10 seconds. I actually like and dislike the high idle for two reasons. I like it because I don't get the clunk from D->R with high idle, but for me it doesn't really make sense to idle 1500rpm+ because I just start the car and drive.

Cold chicago weather, -10 to +30F starts up at 1750RPM most of the time. Past 30F it starts around 1500rpm



Though sometimes I'm baffeled because where it should start up with a fast idle it will only rev to 1250rpm.

my 96 idles around 2k-1700 when its cold, and about 1200-1500 when its warmer out
